Kinabatangan - Officially declared as a Biosphere Reserve on 27 September 2025

The International Coordinating Council (ICC) UNESCO of the Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme has officially declared Kinabatangan as a Biosphere Reserve on 27 September 2025 during the 37th Session of the International Coordinating Council of the Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme in Hangzhou, China. 

This recognition marks another significant milestone in Sabah's ongoing efforts to preserve environmental sustainability and biodiversity at the global level. With this designation, Kinabatangan becomes the second Biosphere Reserve in Sabah after the Crocker Range Biosphere Reserve, and the fourth in Malaysia. To date, there are 785 Biosphere Reserves across 142 countries worldwide.

On the 2nd to 6th of September 2019, a IPSI-8 General Assembly Meeting was held in Kumamoto, Japan. During the meeting, on Agenda Item 4: Rotation of IPSI Steering Committee Membership, SaBC has been elected as one of the Steering Committee Members. The Steering Committee is made up of 11 to 22 IPSI members and as a member of the committee, SaBC will serve for the next two terms of the General Assembly. The centre would like to thank the members for entrusting SaBC with this responsibility.
